Daily Lectionary: Isaiah 14:1-23; 2 Peter 3:1-18
I believe that God has made me and all creatures… (The Small Catechism: Meaning of the First Article of the Apostle’s Creed, Part 1)
In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. You aren’t an accident. The universe is not a cold and thankless place for you. Things don’t just happen. Nor do they happen for some unknown reason.
There’s a God in heaven. He created the universe. He made you. He made those around you. He put you exactly where you are—at this time and in this place. He put the people around you to be a gift to you. He put you around others to be a gift to them, too.
You may not like how you act or how you look or what happens around you. You may even hate yourself. You may feel like that there are parts of you that just seem like a huge mistake.
Ignore those feelings. They aren’t true! They can’t be real! Because this is the reality of the universe: There is a God. He made you. He sent His Son to redeem you. Jesus came at Christmas and was born just like you were born. He lived like you. He suffered like you suffer. He was despised and rejected. He felt like you feel. He was out of place. He was disrespected. But unlike you, He never sinned. In fact, God made the One who knew no sin become your sin so you might become the very righteousness of God (2 Corinthians 5:21).
Jesus lived the truth that God was His Father for you. He then died the death that you deserve for your despair and unbelief. He rose from the dead for your forgiveness and to show you that you will rise from the dead, too. He lives now for you at the right hand of God.
Jesus is your life. He is your salvation. He is the reason that you must go to heaven. He not only is your reality, He makes your reality.
Because Jesus came, you know that God made you. Because Jesus came, you aren’t just one person among the billions of people in this world. No! You are a baptized child of God. There’s not just a God in heaven. No, He’s your God. Because of Jesus—all this is true because of Jesus.
Your world isn’t an accident. Your looks aren’t a mistake. He gave you your body. He made your soul. He gave your body, soul, eyes, ears, and your members as gifts. All that you are and will be in this life is a gift in Christ. God is going to save you. He’s going to make good out of whatever this universe throws at you. Even death itself will work out as good for you. That’s what it means to be a child of God. That’s what it means to have a Father who made you. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.
