Daily Lectionary: Isaiah 30:27-31:9; Revelation 3:1-22
Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, and so be zealous and repent. (Revelation 3:14)
In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. Oh no no no! We don’t want a reproving and disciplining sort of God on Christmas! We want a Santa-Claus God who loves us no matter what we do. We want Old Grandpa God who says, “I don’t like the things they do, but I just can’t help but love them.”
But the Lord loves you too much to leave you in your sins! He loves you betrayed-into-the-hands-of-sinners-much. He loves you beatings-much. He loves you denied-by-His-BFF-much. He loves you Cross-nails-and-spear-much.
God Himself comes not to condemn you but to rescue you. God is born of a Virgin so that He can take upon Himself all that is you. God suffers so that you would be freed from your sins. God dies so that you will never die. God is crucified under Pontius Pilate so that He will never punish you for your sins. God is buried so that your grave isn’t a final resting place but a temporary one. God rises from the dead for your forgiveness.
You are free from your sins. They can’t harm you. They can’t hurt you anymore. They can’t damn you—not in Jesus. And just as important as being saved from your sins is being freed from the need to sin. His Cross and resurrection free you from your slavery to your sins. You don’t have to do them any longer. You are free!
You don’t like the discipline and reproof of God, and you don’t like the Law, because the Law takes from you the things you hold most dear—your sins. God’s reproof levels you. His discipline wrestles your deep dark iniquities out of your hands. His Law kills you.
God doesn’t do this because He’s in a bad mood. He isn’t only angry with you when He corrects you. He accuses you with His Law because He loves you. He Laws you in order to Gospel you. He kills you in order to save you. For only when you have died to your sins, can He raise you from the dead in Christ.
The Lord is coming! Be zealous for Him and repent of your sins. Let His Law kill you so that you may be truly be free from your sins. Because Jesus came on Christmas and showed His Good-Friday-and-Easter-love for you that you will be saved. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.
“My son, do not reject the discipline of the LORD Or loathe His reproof, For whom the LORD loves He reproves, Even as a father corrects the son in whom he delights.” (Proverbs 3:11-12)
